The Background Story

Timothy Gordon, a Catholic high school theology teacher, was fired from Garces Memorial High School for publicly criticizing the Black Lives Matter movement on social media. Gordon took to Twitter to express how he disapproved of the looting, rioting, and destruction of small businesses following a series of protests over the death of George Floyd. He referred to the Black Lives Matter organization as a “terrorist organization” via his conservative political podcast channel “ Rules for Retrogrades.” Gordon’s outspoken criticism of Black Lives Matter caused his employment with the school to be terminated abruptly.

The Aftermath

Politifix spoke with Gordon a few months after his termination. Gordon, who is a married father of six and the sole provider of his family, has not allowed the incident to silence him from publicly speaking out against the Black Lives Matter organization or from publicly expressing other political views.

Gordon is suing the school for breach of his employment contract. According to Gordon, the school chose to not renew his contract, however Gordon claims to have written proof from the school, that he had been presented with a renewal contract and in fact had already signed it. He’s being represented by LiMandri & Jonna LLP.

Due to the negative local news coverage in Bakersfield, CA, which Gordon claims was significantly worse that the national coverage, he felt his family wouldn’t be safe and felt forced to relocate – choosing Mississippi as a place to start a new life. When asked why Mississippi, he didn’t want to elaborate but said that he had considered the area before this controversy.

Gordon doubts he will find employment as an educator due to the negative publicity and for fear of being put in the same situation again. Instead he plans to focus on growing his political conservative podcast and make it a full time profession that will allow him to support his family and still educate others.

Gordon’s eldest daughter Abby had undergone neurosurgery just two months before he lost his job. The Gordon family were managing her medical expenses with insurance through the school. Now that Gordon is unemployed he is forced to pay for her expensive recovery out of pocket. Through Gordon’s website ( where his content can be found ) the family has received generous donations which will help alleviate Abby’s recovery expenses. The family is deeply grateful for the love and support they’ve received thus far.

The negative attention has taken an emotional toll not only on himself but also on his small children. Being chastised from his own community and mislabeled by local news stations has only made him want to fight harder for what is right.

What About Forgiveness?

The Catholic Church nationally has had an image problem for many years now, with their failure to strongly address the numerous sexual abuse cases – often simply reassigning those against whom significant, credible evidence of guilt existed. It’s been concealment culture for abusers but cancel culture for an outspoken conservative Catholic.

The law firm representing Gordon has represented several other high profile cases. It will be interesting to see how this case plays out. Politifix will follow the case and keep our readers informed as things unfold.
