Florida Battleground

Anna Paulina Luna, an Air Force veteran and second generation immigrant of Mexican descent enters the Republican primary for Florida’s 13th Congressional District. Luna has served as the Director of Hispanic Engagement for Turning Point USA, in which capacity she has traveled the country speaking about issues affecting everyday Americans and has strongly advocated against socialist policies. Florida’s 13th congressional district is currently represented by Charlie Crist.

The Republican candidates are currently very diverse. The race now includes Iranian American Amanda Makki, African American Sheila Griffin, and now a Hispanic American- Anna Paulina Luna. The following candidates are also running in the Republican primary for Florida’s 13th congressional district; Matt Becker, George Buck, and Sharon Barry Newby. The primary will occur on August 18, 2020 but the general election will occur on November 3, 2020.

Luna has been a strong voice in the Hispanic conservative movement. She is the current chairwoman of the Hispanic initiative at Prager University. Luna highlights how socialism leads to communism and has failed in every country that has attempted it, including the Soviet Union, People’s Republic of China, Cambodia, Cuba, East Germany, Poland, Romania, and Venezuela. She argues that enacting socialist policies in the United States is detrimental to our individual freedom and should be combated.

When asked what makes socialism so appealing to today’s youth, Luna responded that many of them don’t have any real-world experience, have never held a real job, and are completely naive about what they’re being sold. Luna challenges them to listen to the stories of refugees and immigrants who have fled socialist and communist countries.

Luna also discussed how big tech’s political agenda has enabled it to radicalize and manipulate users with disinformation, especially in regard to fighting the socialist agenda. According to Luna, conservative content is consistently censored, stifled, blocked, and shadow banned, which makes it harder to fight the misinformation on socialistic policies that is disseminated. Luna was recently temporarily restricted from her Twitter account after her post was retweeted by Diego E. Arria, a Venezuelan politician and diplomat who served as Venezuela’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1991–1993. Arria is also a vocal critic of Venezuelan socialism. The tweet featured a picture of Luna wearing her military uniform along with a rifle and sidearm. The tweet was also flagged as sensitive content by Twitter.

Luna further stated that government dependency, which is what left-wing politicians advocate for, is not what the American Dream is supposed to be. According to Luna, free market capitalism is the only way to attain the American Dream. That dream is currently under attack by liberal socialists who demand more government intervention and less individual freedom. Luna knows what it’s like fighting for the American Dream. She mentions how her mother taught her to be a fighter. Luna’s mother put herself through law school while raising three small children on her own. “She’s my hero,” stated Luna. As a Hispanic American, Luna has interacted with many immigrants and refugees who have fled socialist and communist countries in pursuit of individual freedom. She’s made it her mission to educate young Americans to vote against what so many immigrants and refugees have fled from.
